What is Occupational Therapy ?

Occupational Therapy is often defined as a profession that assists individuals in the occupation of living.  The term occupation often has various meanings depending on whom it is being applied to. For instance OT is used to help children with handwriting difficulties learn to properly form and use letters. This allows the child to succeed in their occupation, which is school. With an adult it could mean providing therapy to an individual who was injured on the job. A therapist could serve the role of evaluator and educator and teach the individual proper lifting techniques, which enables the person to return to work and avoid future injuries. As you can see the role of the therapist can vary from person to person, yet the goal always remains the same of maximizing an individual’s potential and enabling them to succeed.
