The Orton Gillingham method of reading instruction is a systematic and highly structured multisensory phonics based approach developed by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. It can be an effective teaching method for students with reading disabilities. This method has been shown to help students fill in some of the gaps that may have occurred in their learning.
The instructor analyzes the student’s strengths and weaknesses to develop a unique approach to allow the student to achieve their optimal level of performance. This teaching method will take students from a step by step sequential manner into more complex material.
This approach is appropriate for students who:
- Have difficulty matching sounds with their associated letters
- Find it difficult to sequence sounds
- Read aloud in an uneven, halting manner
- Frequently “skip over” words or fail to notice punctuation
- Have difficulty remembering spelling patterns
Session Structure:
The first session will be an hour, allowing the instructor to develop a base line of the child’s skill level. Subsequent hour sessions are scheduled once to twice a week for a set number of weeks. After each session the instructor will develop the next lesson plan based on the student’s performance, allowing for individualized treatment that will best address the student’s strengths and weaknesses.
This program is performed by Linda Haeussler, School Psychologist.
